Multilingual website: the right page in every language, for the right visitor.

A multilingual website is a site that serves the same content in more than one language, each with its own URL and metadata. The hard part is the structure, not the translation: language versions have to be linked to each other correctly with hreflang, URLs have to be localized and translations have to be managed from one place. NAFRU applies this structure on its own site in Turkish, English and German.

( 00-01 ) • PROBLEM

The three most common mistakes on multilingual sites.

The search engine shows the wrong language

Someone searching from Germany lands on the Turkish page. We link the language versions to each other with reciprocal hreflang tags.

Translations are scattered across pages

Changing one piece of text means opening three files. We keep all translations in a single structure and catch missing ones at build time.

URLs are the same in every language

The English page still has a Turkish URL. We localize URLs for each language and redirect the old ones.

( 00-02 ) • SCOPE

What we deliver in a multilingual website project.

Per-language URL structure

Each language is published under its own prefix with localized URLs.

Hreflang and sitemap

Language versions are matched to each other both in the page head and in the sitemap.

Translation management

Text is kept in a single structure; missing or extra keys are caught by an automated test.

Per-language metadata

Title, description, share image and structured data are generated separately for each language.

( 00-03 ) • PROCESS

A multilingual website project runs in four steps.

  1. 01

    Languages and markets

We decide which languages will be published and with which pages.

  2. 02

    Structure

The URL scheme, language switcher and translation structure are set up.

  3. 03

    Content

Translations are entered; metadata and image alt text are written for each language.

  4. 04

    Verification

Hreflang, the sitemap and redirects are checked one by one before launch.

( 00-04 ) • FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is hreflang, and why is it needed?

Hreflang is a tag that tells a search engine which language and region a page is for, and where its counterparts in other languages are. If it isn't set up reciprocally, the search engine ignores the tags and may show visitors the page in the wrong language.

Which languages can you build sites in?

Any language you need, starting with Turkish, English and German. The structure is built so that new languages can be added later.

Do you do the translations?

You can provide the translation or ask us for it. Either way, we place the text into the structure and check that the language versions are consistent.

Can languages be added to our existing single-language site?

In most cases, yes. We review the current setup and tell you whether adding a language or rebuilding the structure is the sounder option.
